Qualifications to Register to Vote in New York State

  • be a United States citizen;
  • be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote);
  • live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
  • not be in prison for a felony conviction;
  • not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court; and
  • not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

METHODS TO REGISTER TO VOTE

Methods to register to vote, to change your voting name or address, to enroll/change/update your political party or other aspect of your registration, or to pre-register to vote if you are 16 or 17 years of age (note: applications to change political party enrollment for the primary election in any year must be received by the board of elections no later than February 14th of that year; political party changes received on or after February 15th, will be placed on hold until seven days after the June Primary):

NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY
Tuesday, September 16, 2025

Volunteers are needed at many outdoor locales (high schools, community centers, farmer’s market) to help register voters on National Voter Registration Day and other dates throughout the fall election season. According to data from the 2020 U.S. Census, as many as one in four eligible Americans is not registered to vote. Millions of Americans miss elections each year due to registration problems or missed deadlines, yet our democracy works best when more of us participate. Every year, this important national, nonpartisan civic holiday in celebration of our democracy is held on a Tuesday every September. First observed in 2012, the holiday has gained momentum ever since. The goal is to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities and to register eligible Americans so they can be #VoteReady.
