LWVS is pleased to welcome Khizr Khan for an informative discussion about his life experiences, his embracing of American democracy after immigrating, and his advocacy for the values embodied in the Constitution of the United States. The evening will be moderated by former LWVS president Linda Doucette-Ashman.

This online event will be taking the place of our annual in-person winter fundraiser. As a public service, the webinar will be free to attend. LWVS appreciates donations in any amount to support our mission of encouraging informed and active participation in government.

*Khizr Khan, founder of the Constitution Literacy and National Unity Project, is an advocate for religious freedom as a core element of human dignity. After immigrating to the United States in 1980, he attended Harvard Law School and obtained his LL.M degree. He is licensed to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States, various Federal District Courts, Washington, DC, and New York State courts. In his law practice, he devotes a substantial amount of his time to providing legal services to veterans, men and women serving in uniform, and their families.

Khizr Khan is a Gold Star parent of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan. Capt. Humayun Khan was a University of Virginia graduate who was killed while serving in Iraq as he stopped an attack on his camp and saved the lives of scores of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery Section 60 with full military honors.

Khizr Khan lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is author of three books:

**Linda Doucette-Ashman served as co-president of the LWVS from 2017 to 2019, after having served for several years as a member of the board of directors. During her time on the LWVS board, she served as Voter Service Chair and worked on numerous issues across LWVS portfolios. She also served as a member of the Village Planning Board, Scarsdale High School PTA Board and the Greenacres Neighborhood Association Board.

Doucette-Ashman received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Mount Holyoke College and her law degree from New England School of Law. She is an environmental attorney who left in-house corporate work to raise her children and serve the communities where she has lived.

She currently resides in the Pioneer Valley region of Massachusetts where she and her husband, Harvey, are building their new home. She has two sons, both SHS alums, one in North Carolina and one in Philadelphia.

LWVS will hold its annual general membership information session regarding this year’s School Board Nominating Committee (SBNC) election and the referendum on the proposed amendments to the SBNC Resolution. Laura Liu and Laura Gelblum, current SBNC Administrative Committee Election Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, will be present to answer questions. The information session is open to the public. For purposes of the Zoom presentation and discussion, attendees are strongly encouraged to review materials in advance.

A consensus discussion will immediately follow the information session for purposes of making recommendations to the SBNC Administrative Committee. Only League members may participate.

The SBNC Administrative Committee is the body that solicits candidates for SBNC, proposes amendments to the SBNC Resolution, and runs the SBNC election and referendum on the amendments. The SBNC is the body that vets applicants and nominates a proposed slate of trustees for election to the Scarsdale Board of Education. The SBNC Resolution is the document that governs the school non-partisan election system.

LWVS President and Advocacy Chair Issue Letter re Redistricting Efforts

On Friday, January 14, 2022, LWVS President Alissa Baum and LWVS Voter Service Co-Chair Beatrice Sevcik issued a Letter to the Editor re Redistricting, recapping the efforts of the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) thus far and urging Scarsdale voters to contact the IRC, our NYS legislators, and LATFOR (the agency that aids the legislature in apportioning districts) to redraw and vote for fair districts in a bipartisan manner that keep all of Scarsdale together. Both the Letter to the Editor and the LWVS Redistricting 101 page provide additional information, including links for whom to contact on this issue.

The SBNC is the body of 30 residents serving staggered 3-year terms that vets applicants and nominates the proposed non-partisan slate for the Scarsdale Board of Education. Each year, voters elect new representatives from their neighborhood to fill spots vacated by those who have completed their SBNC service. The SBNC Resolution is the document that governs the school non-partisan election system. Proposed amendments are subject to voter ratification.

In the event of a snow day or run-off election, the vote will be held during the same hours and in the same location on the earlier of Wednesday, January 12, 2022, or the next day school is in session. For more information, visit the Scarsdale SBNC website.

The deadline for Administrative Committee receipt of mail-in ballots at P.O. Box 172H in the Heathcote Golden Horseshoe Post Office is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Please visit the SBNC website to download and print the mail-in ballots and for the instructions on how to complete them. 

As a voter service reminder, please remember that each ballot must be contained within its own mailing envelope bearing the voter’s full name and address, and with the voter’s signature across the seal. Multiple ballots within a single envelope will render all such ballots invalid.
